Casual vs. Formal: What to Wear on the First Date
First dates can be nerve wracking. It’s a new girl that you have never met before or you barely know her, you aren’t sure what she’s going to be like, and you have a ton of little details to worry about. Does your hair look alright? Should you shave? What if she doesn’t like the restaurant? What if she orders something really expensive? Wait, are you paying or splitting the bill? Would it be rude to split the bill? With all of these things bouncing around in your head, you still have to remember that you have to get dressed. Most guys don’t put a ton of thought into what they’re wearing. But tonight you have to pick something out that will look good. Should you go formal or casual?
What’s the Atmosphere Like?
The easiest way to tell if you should dress in a suit and tie is to look at the restaurant you’re going to. If it has an upscale front and waiters that look nice, then you might want to throw a button up on. Another good idea is to look at their menu ahead of time because more often than not the higher the price the better you have to look. Call them ahead of time and ask if the place requires a tie and jacket. It would be extremely embarrassing to show up and be turned away for not being dressed right. Maybe you aren’t going to a fancy restaurant. If you have an outdoor date like hiking or skating then dress for the occasion. Are you meeting at a coffee shop? Feel free to wear a (nice) t-shirt and some (nice) jeans.
What if You Have No Idea?
Sometimes a restaurant can be deceiving when it comes to look and maybe it’s an upscale coffee shop. If you really aren’t sure what you should wear then go for a good middle ground. So long as you aren’t doing something physically, a good semi-casual outfit consisting of a nice button up shirt paired with a good pair of blue jeans and maybe some not-too-fancy dress shoes. This way you’ll look presentable and still be comfortable. But beware. Do not reverse the order of this. Imagine a t-shirt with dress pants and tennis shoes; essentially the opposite of what was just listed. It’s not a pretty sight. Dress pants should only be worn with dress shoes and a formal shirt. Otherwise they don’t fit right and gives your body a strange shape.
Time to Shave
After you’ve figured out what to wear make sure you’re groomed up well. If you have a beard make sure that it’s not straggly and out of control. Give it a good buzz and wash it beforehand. Otherwise shave yourself and style your hair with at least a little bit of product or brushing. If you use cologne go light on it. You’re looking good and ready for your big date.
